CotswoldDOGS is the sister company to Cotswold Animal Therapy, an established Veterinary Musculoskeletal Therapy business, with a specialism in working with both operational and retired working dogs.
Rachael has a degree in Veterinary Nursing and has gone on to do further post graduate qualifications in Veterinary Physiotherapy and Canine Training and Behaviour. She is a qualified Instructor and Assessor with Mantrailing Global. Rachael has done her LANTRA Conservation Detection Dog handler qualification, and is now busy with two potential conservation detection dogs currently in training. Rachael is a member of the Ecology Detection Dogs Britain and Ireland Working Group. This is a collaborative group aiming to develop evidence-based standards and accredited qualifications for Ecology detection dogs and handlers.
As far as mantrailing goes, after working with pet dogs with musculoskeletal problems, and spending hours telling clients that their dogs could no longer do high impact, high energy activities, Rachael was looking for something positive, reward based, fear free and fun for these dogs to do. Something low impact and controlled, yet exciting, fun and addictive. Mantrailing was the answer - it is based on operational methods and provides a great workout for the brain, and a controlled workout for the body.
In addition, Rachael has been studying the relationship between training problems/behaviour and musculoskeletal pain, and found that Mantrailing was not only low impact, it was also often suitable for dogs with behavioural problems, reactivity issues, or training challenges.
Rachael is a full member of RAMP, and MantrailingUK, and has an up to date DBS check. Rachael also remains on the RCVS Register of Veterinary Nurses, and is a Veterinary Nursing assessor and Internal Verifier, and is committed to upholding high professional standards. and to positive, reward based work with dogs.

Mantrailing for sport is when we teach a dog to use his nose to find a person that we've hidden in a location. Mantrailing is used operationally to find missing people by search and rescue teams, but for pet owners Mantrailing us usually just a fun sport.
Each human has a unique scent, and leaves a scent trail behind when they move. This trail might contain thigs like skin cells, bacteria, or sweat.
As we move, this scent trail billows out from us, is moved by the air, and then sticks to things like vegetation, objects or the ground. When we give the dog this scent, usually in the form of a scent-article like a hat, once they are trained correctly they can follow this scent to locate the hidden person.
As you can imagine, in the search and rescue field this can be a life saving skill, and it's used police and military forces across the world.
Whilst dogs and handlers need specific and in-depth training to be allowed to do this operationally, anyone can do it for fun and it's wonderful for building a great relationship with your dog whilst they are doing what comes naturally...sniffing!!
Trailing with a qualified instructor is essential.
When trailing, handlers need someone with them to relay information, ensure safety and coach them along. It's amazing what your instructor will see that you may miss when you are concentrating.
Your instructor will ensure that you remain safe, and your dog remains safe at all times, and will help ensure that you are not doing anything that might affect your dog learning to trail.
Mantrailing Global & MantrailingUK instructors are rigorously trained and examined to ensure that they are able to not only teach safely, but that they are able to train and understand the dogs. They are bound by a code of professional conduct, and must undergo CPD each year to maintain standards and to be allowed to continue to teach.
Trailing without a correctly qualified instructor could affect your dog's progress, set you back, cause glitches in the training process, or could result in safety issues.
Most dogs can mantrail!! There are a few criteria:
- The dog must be happy and comfortable in a harness. Your instructor will ensure this is set up correctly, fits well, and is the right type. If the dog can't wear a harness, they won't be able to trail.
- The dog must be able to walk/mobilise comfortably over distances of up to 50- 500m for 'beginner' level.
- The dog must be happy on a long line, and be able to spend short periods securely in a car crate.
Beyond this, most dogs can trail! Reactive dogs often find Mantrailing confidence-building, and all MantrailingUK instructors are familiar and trained in working with all kinds of dogs.
If you have a puppy (under 6 months), please speak to your instructor about getting them started.
Mantrailing Introductory sessions are 3 hours long and are £65-70 depending on venue cost. Once you've done an intro you can join any progression sessions with any MantrailingUK instructor.
Progression sessions are dependent on venue costs but are:
£25-28 for two hour sessions
£35-40 for three hour sessions
£30-50 for private sessions
If you've never been Mantrailing before, you'll need to start by attending an introductory training session.
This will teach you the principles of Mantrailing, will introduce your dog to what they need to do, and will ensure you're safe and understand the limitations of non-operational trailing.
Once you've attended an intro session - which you can do with any Mantrailing Global & MantrailingUK instructor - you can book onto Progression sessions. (again, you can book onto progression sessions with any MTUK instructor)
If you've got a group of friends that all want to have a go, we can organise private intro and progression sessions too -- just get in touch to arrange this. There will need to be at least three of you for this.
Scent training has become really popular in recent times, and there are lots of different trials and competitions to enter.
Training professional search dogs who are being aimed at operational roles is very different to pet dogs, but pet dog scentwork is both fun (for owner and dog!) and a great psitive bonding experience. Any dog can have a go at pet dog scent work!
In the beginning, it's important to just put the basics in place so that you have solid foundations. CotswoldDOGS can help you with this - all scent work is currently run on a 1:1 basis, so you'll just need to contact us using the form at the bottom of this page to arrange a session. The sessions are around an hour long each and cost £35, and we'll also spend time making sure you learn some theory about scent too.
We accept card payments for these sessions.
